Personally, I would avoid StarHub and M1 because of SingTel’s dominance (49% market share in mobile customer and 42% in broadband).
I think the prospect for StarHub and M1 would only get worse as both companies’ businesses are solely entrenched in Singapore, which is already very saturated. With the entry of TPG, the competition would further put pressure on the profit margins. For Starhub, technology also impacts its “hubbing strategy” as NetFlix is giving it a run for its money in the Pay TV segment. Furthermore, it takes time for the new CEO to settle down in his role. So I expect the share price to continue to slide.
For M1, there was a strategic review in 2017 whereby the major shareholders considered selling their stakes. The review did not materialize in any transactions but nevertheless, the move sent a signal to investors. Thus, I am also not very optimistic on the long-term prospect of M1 share price.
The above is just my opinion. I am not vested in any local telco shares. You may access the articles that I have written on SingTel, StarHub and M1 as you are a member. Thank you.
